The idea to bring Calder into the Braniff family first occurred to George Gordon.  Braniff's market Southbound into the South American travel market brought Gordon and Calder together for lunch.  Also present was a small model plane which Gordon had brought along.  At the end of the meeting, the request was popped:  "I'd liked you to paint a plane" said Gordon.  "That toy?" Calder asked.  "No, a real, large full sized jet."  "I'd get a kick out of that.  I'd like to see my colors flying in the sky" said Calder.  And that was that....
